Pop surrealist Amit Greenberg wants to create a playful world

If you haven’t heard Amit Greenberg’s name already, you will soon. The Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist is blowing up in the fashion and art scene with impressive and inventive work for the likes of Chanel, Fendi, Louis Vuitton and Parisian concept store Colette.

His most recent project was decorating The Hollywood Roosevelt’s pop-up rosé and oyster bar, The Rosy Oyster. Mixing photography, collage and narrative line drawings with an adult twist, Amit says his pop surrealist artwork is “an active exploration of spirituality, sexuality, mortality, fear and joy.”

Typically, his process is inspired by the surrealist automatic writing technique and translated into ink drawings. “Each shape ignites my imagination for the next figure, object or text that will complement its neighbor like a puzzle piece. The result is an elaborate tableau of fictitious characters and scenarios, projecting a cacophony of voices eager to be heard,” he says.

That stream of consciousness approach and its intriguing results have resonated. Before his debut solo show unveiled, Amit had work displayed at the Whitney Museum of American Art and SFMoMA—and he hasn’t slowed down any since then.

“I strive to create a playful world; the viewer is encouraged to indulge and get lost in multi-dimensional work. The deeper the inspection, the greater the reward.”
