Site specific art dots the Coachella Valley in an incredible exhibition that brings together artists from around the world.
The one-of-a-kind experience is on display through the end of April, with a few select pieces staying in situ for the longer term. Artists involved include Doug Aitken, Sherin Guirguis, Tavares, Strachan, Lita Albuquerque, Jeffrey Gibson, Gabriel Kuri, Richard Prince, Robb Pruitt, Juliao Sarmento, Glenn Kaino, and Will Bonne. The works created for Desert X “amplify and articulate global and local issues that may range from climate change to starry skies, from tribal culture and immigration to tourism, gaming, and golf.”
An early favorite among visitors is Doug Aitken’s MIRAGE (pictured above), a site-specific installation that is essentially a mirrored house in the vast desert. Set against the rocky landscape, speckled with flowers from the recent superbloom, Aitken’s “MIRAGE is reconfigured as an architectural idea: the seemingly generic suburban home now devoid of a narrative, its inhabitants, their possessions,” the site for the installation reads. “This minimal structure now functions entirely in response to the landscape around it.”
